Thing #23 Summary - Done, but not quite

As I went back through all of my explorations of the 23 things, I realize that I have come a VERY LONG way in just a few short weeks (24 days!) I am no longer afraid to try new things on my computer or on the Internet, and I now understand the techno-terms I've been hearing for so long!
1. What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?

I absolutely loved MOST of the time I spent exploring and fell in love with most tools. A few of my favs are Library Thing, Mashups (trading cards and mosaics), Rollyo, Delicious, YouTube, TeacherTube, and Google tools. I also love the Common Craft videos and will look for new videos in the future. I absolutely can no longer live without Delicious, Google tools and my RSS reader.


2. How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?

As stated above in my introduction, I am no longer afraid of trying new technology on my computer and the Internet. I have SOOOOO many ideas to use technology to my advantage that I cannot wait for school to start, so I can use these ideas and tools on my students and fellow faculty. Maybe now, I can mentor and help my fellow teachers / students more in the area of technology.


3. Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?

What surprises me the most is that I am actually excited about Web 2.0 applications and implementing many of the 23 things into my library program. I've never been a lover of technology, but now I'm hooked for good!
Also, I am amazed that so many of the tools are free, or have a low membership/usage fee.


4. What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?

I agree with Alice's idea (I think it was Alice) of putting an expected time reference that a newbie would need to complete the assignment at the beginning of each activity. I realize however, that it might be impossible, because people come in at all different skill levels.
One other thing to mention is that on thing # 17, the video created by Bruce Goodner made Rollyo much earsier to visualize its use for the library/school and to understand its concept. Maybe the link to his video should be moved up to the introduction portion of this actvity.

5. If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you choose to participate?
I would jump at the chance to participate in more programs like this because the exploration and discovery format is best for me. BUT NOT IN SUCH A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. I really would have benefitted from more time to play with each tool before moving on to the next. I need time to process what I've learned before having new information thrown at me. The time crunch really pushed me to my outer limits.

6. How would you describe your learning experience in ONE WORD or in ONE SENTENCE, so we could use your words to promote 23 Things learning activities?
Totally Awesome!

I have enjoyed blogging with my new friends and can't wait to read and comment on some of the blogs I entered in my RSS reader.

Though this project is complete, I am not finished exploring and discovering more about technology. As my TeacherTube video showed, we are living in exponential times of growth in technology. I don't want to miss out on anymore and be that far behind ever again. Here's to life long learning!!!!!

Thing #22 - Nings

Before this, I had never heard of a Ning. I took some time to read about it and explored 2 of the 3 suggested Nings: TeacherLibrarian and Texas School Librarians. I joined both Nings as well as joined 3 groups in the TeacherLibrarian Ning: Elementary School Librarians, Building a Culture of Collaboration, and Information Fluency Project. These groups discuss issues that are important to me as a teacher-librarian so after joing the groups and reading some of the discussions, I added them to my RSS reader.
I think it's important for school librarians to collaborate with each other for fresh new ideas to help keep our libraries up to date. With a tool like a Ning, we are able to "discuss" ideas with experts in the field from across the country.

Thing 21 - Podcasts and audio books

I am not having much luck with either of these. I don't think I have the right equipment and / or software. I have know microphone except in my webcam and I don't seem to have what I need to create a photostory with music or sound. I downloaded Photostory 3 and used it to create photostory with our Disney World pictures. by closing the program and reopening it, I was finally able to work with the slide transitions, but when I tried to add music, it got messed up. The story gets stuck on the 1st slide while all of the music plays, which you can't even hear because I was trying to use my webcam microphone. Furthermore, I was in narration edit, because I don't have any music buttons what so ever. This is not the photostory program I have used in the past at school. It is simply, insert photos, type a title, make them transition and maybe add narration. I've gone to the help documents, but they say to click on the buttons I don't have in my applications. I spent about 7 hours working on this project, but gave up about 3am this morning. I will go on and finish the rest of the things, and will try to come back to this one. I'm too frustrated right now. Finally, on my third attempt, I think I may have it down! I went and got my school laptop, downloaded photostory 3 on it and I think it will work, even though I did it all by myself. So here goes....

If this one works, I'm ready to create a photostory showing 3rd -5th graders the procedures and sequence for checking out their own books at the circulation computer, and a photostory giving a tour of the library, since it has been totally redone this summer with shelves being moved, sections being integrated and a whole new theme. Even though my brain has been stretched to its limits, it is still coming up with more ideas for the use of photostory in the library. (How about showing how to cite a book from the library or -wait this is good - how about showing students step by step how to create a photostory of their research. No, not good, they probably already know how to do it!) Anyway, I'm not frustrated anymore!

thing #20 - YouTube and TeacherTube

Trying to see many of the videos on TeacherTube, as well as the samples was very frustrating for me. They seemed to load ok, and then, while watching, every few seconds the video would have to pause for buffering. I'm not sure what the problem was, whether it was equipment, internet, or something like site traffic, but I'll continue to use this at different times. I did get this one to work from TeacherTube. I've seen it before and was asstonished by the rate of growth for the internet!!! Check it out!



When searching for different classroom lessons and such, I found so many that I liked, and that I know will hold students' attention for skills and lessons. I really like one called "Mr. Duey raps fractions" on TeacherTube. I couldn't make it through much of it because of the buffering, but what I did get to see was fun. I also found a few that were so boring, I had to turn them off. (One on teaching the Super 3 reminded me of a 1960's monotone voiced filmstrip!) Even videos on TeacherTube need to be previewed or the results may be "death by video."

When I searched through YouTube, the videos worked much better, but I didn't find a whole lot that could be used in the classroom using the search terms suggested. Most videos could be used for presentations to teachers. When I searched "educational videos for children," I had better success. I even found the old "School House Rock" video for teaching nouns and all the other School House Rock videos were listed as well. I used to love School House Rock on Saturday mornings!

thing #19 - Web2.0 awards

Right before I began this activity, my husband asked me if I knew how to set up a website for his family business, and I said I'd look into it for him. I don't know if I can set up an entire site, but I know how to set up a page. I went to the start page list and explored those, some more than others. I was most impressed with iGoogle and Netvibes. They were the most user friendly, loaded pages quicker, and had business aspects and help included. Pageflakes was ok, but slower to load pages and Groovle, and My Yahoo just didn't match up with the first 2 mentioned. (I might have been getting tired by then so I want to investigate them more.) My husband knows NOTHING about technology (he asked me how to compose a new email message and attach a photo last week!) and he just wants it to happen.
Next, I looked into more wiki sites, because I want to create one for my book club at school this year. I am still most impressed with Wetpaint but like Wikidot as well. It's a tossup now as to which I will use. I think I'll set up both and play with them a few weeks before making a decision.
I put this site into my Delicious account so I can explore more when I have more time. This list is worth a lot more time than I can give right now.

Thing #18 - online tools

I played around with Google docs because someone mentioned how neat it was in class the other night, but also because Open Office was not available today. I created a "love note" for both my husband and my son and inserted a picture a heart in the sky from Flickr. I also linked the caption back to the site with the picture / credits opened. I haven't checked their email yet, but I cc'd it to myself and my copy arrived a second later!

I can see where this type of sharing will be beneficial in that tons of emails with attachments won't have to be sent / received only to clutter up your inbox, desktop, or document folders. Also, updates are made right there on the original so there will be no question of which doc is the newest copy. Maybe this would be an easy way to keep a consideration file - create a Google doc for each type of material (books, magazines, equipment, etc...) and share with teachers, who could then update with their requests. It will also be a great tool to use when collaborating with a team and planning a presentation, whether it's for a class research project or staff development. The only disadvantage I can see is that teachers are often resistant to anything new because they think it might create more "work" for them. Maybe if their requests are noticed and fulfilled, or their lessons are partly planned by others the transition will happen, sooner rather than later.
PS - I hope to be able to play around with Open Office soon.

thing #17 - Rollyo

It took me awhile to figure out how to use Rollyo and I think if I play with it further, I'll understand it a little better. The video created by Bruce Goodner was very helpful and I wish I would have watched it first. I was able to create a few searchrolls and I inserted a searchbox on my blog (in the left sidebar.) I think the one that might be most useful to my students in the future will be the searchroll called "my books + authors." There, they can search my favorite sites for books and reviews. I do need to tweek the list, deleting sites that I don't know much about or may be difficult for elementary students to navigate, and I need to add a few of my own that I use frequently. I also created searchrolls for my favorite scrapbooking sites and baseball sites.
I love how a teacher can decide what sites students will be able to go to when doing research. It will limit the number of sites for students to look through when entering search terms, therefore saving valuable time and frustration for everyone. Students will only have to see age appropriate sites and therefore will only have to evaluate the information for relevance to their research / project. The only disadvantage I see is the search is limited to the teacher's knowledge of websites.

Thing #16 - wikis

WOW! I didn't know how useful and how much fun a wiki could be. When school begins this fall I plan to create a wiki for a new book club at my elementary school. I'd like to teach the 3rd-5th grade students to use the wikki and blog back and forth about the books they are reading, maybe write a summary. They can also view the wiki for upcoming bookclub events, dates and books we might be reading, as well as make suggestions of their own. We will probably have to break into small groups and read different titles since I don't have more than 3-4 copies of favs. (I'll have to teach the students not to give away any book endings!) Websites I am considering using are www.wetpaint.com or www.wikispaces.com or http://pbwiki.com (I need to see and play with all features before I choose a site that's best for us.)
Another goal in using this wiki is to show teachers the usefulness of this type of learning tool. I doing that, they may be more accepting of the staff developments I hope to create later.

Thing #15 - Web 2.0

When I became a new librarian with no experience and little training, I didn't know half the responsibilities of the position. And when I began this class (Media and Technology) and the 23 Things project, I really didn't know just how much technology and web innovations I was missing. If I were a boat, there were many icebergs standing in the way of my effort to bring my school library into and beyond a world of transition! I'm not sure I'm ready to embrace a library of total virtual reality, but I am impressed by OCLC's Open Worldcat Project, which apparently enables libraries to open their metadata to a much broader audience, worldwide in fact! Now, using RSS feeds, John Reimer, http://www.oclc.org/nextspace/002/5.htm
says that libraries like UCLA can "send" their content out to users in their preferred settings. Furthermore, webtools can be incorporated to allow users to submit reviews, assign tags and participate in the library in other forms, not just as a receiver of information. In this way, libraries are "harnassing collective intelligence" by incorporating "coopoperative cataloging, resource sharing, and virtual reference cooperative," says Chip Nilges, Vice President of OCLC's News services. http://www.oclc.org/nextspace/002/4.htm
It's all very impressive, and some of the future world will be incorporated into the elementaty school libraries, however, I still think young elementary children need the warmth, tenderness and compassion of a school librarian.

thing #14 - technorati blog search

At first, I didn't care for Technorati very much because it seemed busy and complicated to me, but as I watched the videos and read the blog about it, I began to realize what a great tool it can be in searching for blogs about topics that interest you. In the YouTube video, one of the executives said that blogs are stories of real human experience unedited, while shows and websites for companies may have gone through layers and layers of editors. He also said that Technorati connects real people directly with other real people. Now, someone searching for a normal person's real opinion about something can search the web using Technorati's tag system and connect with that person.

Thing 13 - social bookmarking

I really like the common craft videos because they make everything that's confusing seem so easy. I used the Delicious website to create my social bookmarking account because it was recommended and it's was easy to create and use. I can't wait to share this with my colleagues at school so they can share websites with each other and I can share with my fellow district librarians. I think this is a powerful tool for organizing all of your websites whether they are professional or personal. I am going to use it in my Scrapbooking business as well as at school. Now, I won't have to remember which computer I saved websites in and can find them easily from any computer.

thing 12-creating community through commenting

I got alot out of this activity. I am a rather shy person and new to blogging and it all makes me sort of nervous. After reading helpful tips from "coolcat teacher" and the Rowse's 10 techniques to get more comments, the 10 commandments of blog commenting, blue skunk's comments on commenting and Drake's takes on edublogger etiquette, I feel a little better about putting my comments out there for others to read. All of these bloggers made it clear that they welcome and appreciate relevant and meaningful comments to their posts, as long as the comments add value to the "conversation." Also, if you have written a post about the topic and refer to your post in the comment, a hyperlink should be included that links to your post. That way, others can read and comment on your blog.
Another point I read that makes a lot of sense is to be polite and not condescending when pointing out errors in a post or comment. Opinions can be expressed in a friendly manner and sarcasm will never work in blogging.
One last thing that I'm grappling about is whether or not to use my real name or an alias. Giving too much information about myself is rather scary for me, but using a complete alias is cold and impersonal. I'm thinking of using my part of my name with an alias to help distinguish myself from others with the same name. (Maybe Terri @ the Library - what do you think about that?)

I've blogged to the outside world today. I blogged on a scrapbooking website called Smilebox and on a Chronicle website on a baseball blog. (The baseball blog was still loading when I started this blog, so I hope it works. Since it's through the Chronicle, I wonder if it always takes awhile to load?) I've also blogged to several classmates and I'm enjoying continuing to blog with them.

#11 - Library thing

I really love this tool for keeping track of your personal books! I wish I would have known about this 15 years ago when I was really buying a lot of books for my classroom. Now, I have so many books that it's going to be hard to start. I guess I'll startwith my more current books that I'm reading and eventually work my way back.

Setting up my account and entering some books was extremely easy. I even put in some tags for future use. I also like how you can join a group with similar people. I joined the Librarians who Library thing. I didn'e enter into any dicsussions yet, just watched for awhile. I also skimmed through the talk tab at the top and clicked on a few of the Harry Potter discussions. Very interesting!

The last thing I did was to look at the local tab and entered my zip code to see what events are taking place. It said there weren't any listed within 10 miles of my area. I might need to broaden that out to 20 miles or so, since La Porte doesn't have many big venues. I tried to enter the RSS into my reader for my group and local events, but it popped up that there weren't feeds available for those links.

Online image generator - thing 10

I think using online image generators can be used to promote library etiquette, procedures and programs. It will be fun to play with these tools some more to make signage and etiquette reminders to display in the library. I was able to create a few fun items that I can implement pretty quick at the beginning of the year.

This one can be posted around the circulation desk as a reminder to turn bookd in on time.

I did have some trouble navigating the custom sign generator and actually creating a sign for use in the library. I will play around with it more because I think it can be very useful. I was trying to create a sign with a popular character, like the Hulk, to remind students to use their shelf markers or not to leave unwanted books on the floor, both big problems in our library.
This discovery activity was fun to play with!

Finding feeds - thing 9

It took me a long time to try each of these search tools and I was successful in finding some pertinent feeds to add to my reader. The easiest tools to use were Blogline, Edublogs award winners and School library blogs on suprglu. In Blogline, I just used the key word library and, though there were way too many sites listed, I did find a few great blogs on the right under "matching feeds." I found even more great blogs when I narrowed my search to school library. The best tools were the Edublogs and School Library blogs on suprglu. Of course, the award winners were all good and separated by category. There, I just clicked on the "Best library blogs" to get to the sites most relevant to my library! How easy was that!?! In School Library blogs, I found a great site created by "The Loud Librarian." It's a blog set up for a library using Blogmeister created by David Warlick. By using the tabs at the top, I was able to read how class bogmeister was set up, and it seems easy enough that I can do this at my elementaty school this year.
When I tried to use Syndic8 and Technarati, searching with keywords, I wasn't very successful. At first, my keywords were too broad (library and school library) and when trying to narrow it down (school media center and school media center programs), I didn't get very many feeds and in Syndic8, what I did get, were all older and no longer usable. Maybe I wasn't using the right keywords, or something. In Technarati, I tried to use the blog directory where the preselected tabs are and there wasn't a category for education at all. When I used key words such as "school library" or "school media center" I got sites totally unrelated to school or libraries. That was sort of frustrating to me.

RSS - thing 8

I really enjoyed watching Leelefever's video on RSS and Google Reader. He made the concept so clear and easy to understand. It was easy to add Reader to my Google account. I added the news bundle and 5 sites like suggested. I found 2 scrapbooking and 3 library sites that I like. Since I own a small scrapbooking home business, I want to keep up with the latest digital technology in scrapbooking and now the most current news will come to me at home instead of me having to look for it myself. Maybe now I can keep up with my tech savy customers.
I really found the Library TWeeter site fun! I liked that someone out there is reading the same thing I am and experiencing the same things in her library. I look forward to blogging with her about current releases, award winners, library programs and such. I think it will help me keep my school library current and interesting to my students!

I never imagined so many tools were available through google! I created a calendar, a homepage with igoogle, and a picasa web album, which can be found at http://picasaweb.google.com/terrimay1984
Though this album can be viewed, the user cannot download or purchase photos from this album for privacy concerns.
I linked my homepage and my calendar to my husband's emial so he can view it as well.

mashups - trading cards and mosaics #6


While working on thing #6, I had a great time playing with the mashups and third party sites, and all the toys and tools they offer. The mosaics will be great in creating signage and presentations in the library. Also, the trading cards will be fun to make with my new book club participants. With parental consent, we can take photos of the kids and they can add text, like a summary of a recent book they read. We can then print a few of the trading cards on card stock and the kids can hand them out to their friends.

I love the Flickr website, however in using the search term butterfly, I found some questionable photos that I wouldn't want my kids to see. I did find this photo capturing 2 of my favorite animals! What wonderful photography! It is called

Since I teach elementary K-5th grade kids, I'm not sure about using flickr creative commons in the classroom. I'm not sure the photos are screened properly for young eyes in mind. I will use it to enhance some of my lessons, planned in advance, of course.

Things 3 & 4 creating a blog & avatar

Well, I'm not sure still if I even got it right yet. Creating this blog and adding the avatar was hard for me and very frustrating. I finally was able to get back to my blog page and paste the avatar on there, and there it will stay! I hope this post is going in the right place. I'm not sure what I'm doing, or how to find blogs from my classmates to respond to them. I'm going to try that next.

Thing 2- 7.5 habits response

In reponse to Thing #2 - 7.5 habits of successful people, I have to say, first of all, that blogging is an experience I've never had before. I'm very uncomfortable with the whole idea.
Of the 7.5 habits listed, teaching and mentoring others comes very easily for me. It is something I do everyday in my life, whether it's at school or in my home business, which is scrapbooking with Creative Memories. My web site is
